Trial - Online Activation

Online activation is one of the two methods HTML Executable offers. Online activation has some advantages over registration keys: for instance, you can remotely control who can activate your publication and unlock registered editions of your publications. Online activation also ensures that end users can only activate their key on a given number of computers, because the activation server tracks the number of times your ebook is activated.

Online activation requires a remote web server with the HTML Executable Activation Kit installed on it, or an active subscription with our hassle-free ebook protection service named Protect Ebook .net.

The remote server that handles activations, manages the database with ebooks and customers is called activation server in this documentation.

When your publication uses online activation, it interacts with the activation server automatically: automation is really the key as it lets you gain in productivity. The activation kit or Protect Ebook .net provides you with easy tools to manage your ebooks and your customers online.

Activation Steps

Take the following example: you sell an ebook and you have a website where customers can buy your ebook online with PayPal (for instance).

  1. The user places an order for your publication from your authorized reseller (for instance PayPal). The latter sends the order information with user details to the activation server (configured with the HTML Executable Activation Kit or our Protect Ebook .net activation service). An account with the user details is stored in the database, and a unique activation key is sent to the end user (by email for instance).

  2. The user starts the publication and enters his activation key in the nag screen as shown below. He clicks Activate.

  3. The publication connects to the activation server and provides it with information like the registration key, the unique system IDNo private personal data is sent.

  4. The activation server searches for the account associated with the registration key in the database. If the account is found, it checks the number of allowed activations, whether the account is locked or not… If the registration is allowed, the server generates a registration key and returns it to the publication along with the user’s name and organization.

  5. The publication analyses the registration data. If the activation is allowed by the server, the certificate is activated; otherwise, an error message is displayed.

A proxy can be configured with Network Settings by the user if he uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet. The publication will remember this proxy setting for deactivation and validation.

Everything can be automated thanks to the HTML Executable activation kit or the use of Protect Ebook .net
